About Us - Tshwane District Hospital

Opens its doors on the 7th March 2006 with only 103 beds. TDH is located in Central Tshwane sub district with an estimated population of more than 400 000 people.

To date 177 out of the 200 approved beds are active:

Paediatrics = 19 beds

Maternity = 20 beds

Postnatal = 20 beds

Adult = 118 beds

New services that are about to be opened are 20 bed Kangaroo mother care and comprehensive termination of pregnancy. The mostrecent achievement is the acquisition of high technology eye surgery equipment. Quality Assurrance and Occupational Health and Safety units are there to ensure compliance to relevant norms and starndards.

 

More than 500 personnel are employed at the hospital. TDH is situated in the premises previously occupied by Steve Biko Hospital and is an academic training ground for doctors,nurses,clinical associates and allieds

About Us - Quality Assurrance at TDH

The Department will priorities quality of patient care in line with point 3 of the NDOH 10-Point Plan.
Improving the Quality of Health Services. Activities envisaged by NDOH include:

  • Establishment of a National Quality Management and Accreditation Body
  • Empowering Sub-district teams to coordinate with ward councilors
  • Integrated communication strategy for internal and external customers.
  • Reinforcing Batho Pele principles and patient rights and responsibilities.
  • Identification of quality problems in health care establishments and implementing plans to address the inefficiencies and inequities.
  • Regular monitoring of quality of clinical care and implementation of specific recommendations to resolve problems
  • . Autonomy for CEOs with accountability, and minimal third parties.
  • Strengthening the Customer Care Programme at facility level.

The national programme requires all institutions to have their quality monitored and accredited and also that all institutions have a quality improvement plan in all five priority areas:

  • Patient safety • Staff attitudes
  • Cleanliness
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Waiting times.

About Us - Infection Control at TDH

The important components of the infection control programme are:
• Basic measures for infection control, i.e. standard and additional precautions;

• Education and training of health care workers;

• Protection of health care workers e.g. immunization;

• Identification of hazards and minimizing risks;

• Routine practices essential to infection control such as aseptic techniques, use of single use devices, reprocessing of instruments and equipment, antibiotic usage, management of blood/body fluid exposure, handling and use of blood and blood products, sound management of medical waste.

• Effective work practices and procedures such as environmental management practices including management of hospital/clinical waste, support services(e.g., food, linen), uses of therapeutic devices

• Surveillance;

• Incident monitoring;

• Outbreak investigation;

• Infection control in specific situations and research.
