For the first time in history of Tshwane District Hospital, July 2007 saw the first group board members appointed by the MEC. The board members are currently only five in number and they are Ms. Gladys Petje, Dr. Barry and Mr. Chinsamy, Mr. Nkambule and Mr. Albertyn. Our board is currently in place and running smoothly. It is the wish of the board to see a healthy cooperation between the staff and board in the name of health service delivery. The Chairperson of the board Ms. Gladys Petje encourages staff members to work tirelessly and unreservedly for the community they are serving.
The term of office for each group of members is three (3) consecutive years. Appointment of community members to serve in a board follows an extensive process of advertising in newspapers, calling for nominations through NGOs (Non Governmental Organisation), CBOs (Community Based Organisations) and other community based organizations.
University representatives are nominated by the University Deans. It is the role of the board to serve as a resource to be consulted by the hospital management on distinguished issues, and again it (the board) has the responsibility to represent the interest of the community in the hospital. The CEO remains responsible for the executive and operational decisions taken daily for the hospital and report to the Head of Department, while the board fulfills its advisory and oversight function and reports directly to the MEC for Health. For projects that are not covered in the hospital budget, the board is responsible to raise funds for the hospital. The hospital board may even receive donations on behalf of the institution and decide on how to utilize such resources.
It is expected of board members to at least inspect the hospital once everythree months as stipulated in the Hospital Ordinance of 1958 as amended in 1999. As per the norm, the board should meet every month, and must have met not less than six times in a period of an annum.
